Vibrant musical celebration attracts choirs from far and wide

The hills around MacKillop Senior College will be alive with the sounds of music on Sunday August 28th at 2 pm when eleven community choirs will gather to strut their stuff.

Choral Kaleidoscope has become an annual choral event in Port Macquarie celebrating the variety of choirs in our district and beyond. Musical Director Robyn Ryan says the response has been overwhelming this year so much so that some choirs had unfortunately been turned away. “Whilst we want very much to encourage the development of choral communities too many choirs would mean not enough on-stage time for individual choirs, so it’s a shame but does create the positive need to somehow expand this increasingly popular event next year” said Ms Ryan.

Guest choirs at the 2011 Choral Kaleidoscope include locals Blokes Notes, Myrth  (a female trio who write and perform their own material drawing on personal experience), Out of the Shower (from Comboyne and Byabarra), Bella Bago (wowing audiences since 2000), jazz-oriented Wednesday, Cantorus (the large Hastings Choristers choir) and Cantabile (Choristers’ female ensemble). And we warmly welcome from Uralla, High Spirits  (well after all,the altitude there is 1000 metres!). Returning again from Forster is The Company of Voices as well as the Village Voices choirs from each of Tuncurry and Laurieton.

Hosted by Hastings Choristers this very popular afternoon concert has wide appeal because the participating choirs always present a plethora of musical genre ensuring foot-tapping tunes, amusing songs, musical theatre, folk, multi-cultural music and much more plus a chance for the audience to sing along. The concert concludes with a massed choir item where all choirs join together in song – a fantastic way to end any concert.

This latest concert continues Hastings Choristers year-long celebration of the group’s 21st birthday and audience members may like to find out more about the organisation by purchasing a copy of ‘Our Story’, a commemorative coffee-table style book detailing the history, concerts and memorable moments of Hastings Choristers since inception.  ‘Our Story’ sells for $20 and will be available to buy at the Choral Kaleidoscope concert.

Choral Kaleidoscope is a wonderful way to spend two hours on the final Sunday of winter. With only one performance, limited seating selling fast, and bargain prices $25, $20, $10 including program and afternoon tea, potential patrons should hurry to the  Glasshouse Box Office to secure  their tickets or phone 65 81 8888 or online at www.glasshouse.org.au
